Félix Rubén García Sarmiento, conocido como Rubén Darío (Metapán, hoy Ciudad Darío, 18 de enero de 1867–León, 6 de febrero de 1916), fue un poeta, periodista y diplomático nicaragüense, máximo representante del modernismo literario en lengua española. Es, tal vez, el poeta que ha tenido mayor y más duradera influencia en la poesía del siglo XX en el ámbito hispánico. Es llamado príncipe de las letras castellanas

Para la formación poética de Darío fue determinante la influencia de la poesía francesa. En primer lugar, los románticos, y en especial Victor Hugo. Más adelante, y con carácter decisivo, llega la influencia de los parnasianos: Théophile Gautier, Leconte de Lisle, Catulle Mendès y José María de Heredia. Y, por último, lo que termina por definir la estética dariana es su admiración por los simbolistas, y entre ellos, por encima de cualquier otro autor, Paul Verlaine.^[24] Recapitulando su trayectoria poética en el poema inicial de Cantos de vida y esperanza (1905), el propio Darío sintetiza sus principales influencias afirmando que fue «con Hugo fuerte y con Verlaine ambiguo».
